Marlboro On: The night in NYC when I went to that blogger's meet

... and wished I hadn't, 14 Sept 09 Dress up Soiree

The fashion soiree event itself was OK, it was just the panel were saying that that really irritated me.

The topic itself probably made for a bad idea, I mean asking other bloggers how they became a success 'yawn'… Who starts a blog in hope of it becoming a success? More to the point what is a blogging success, getting so big that the blog gets infiltrated by advertisers who want to ride the waves of your audience numbers? I don’t know, perhaps some people do start with money/ fame in mind and there is nothing wrong with that, but I always thought blogs were a place to express yourself – to hell with anyone/ thing else. Even what you are putting out there has been done before a million times over. Because, let’s face it blogging has been done plenty.

I spent most of my time at the ‘soiree’ sat on the floor at the front, legs akimbo (classy) rolling my eyes at every word said (to the irritation of the lady in the leopard print dress – name anyone??). When the girl from whatIwore.com stood up to announce that she no longer needed to work because her blog was so ‘successful’ I wanted to run headfirst into the wall opposite me.

No disrespect to any of the ladies on the panel that night – to be fair it all felt a little bit awkward - I just would have just liked someone to have said ‘I’m a fashion blogger, I like to take pics of myself and post them up for other people to see. Hell yeah I’m fashionable, but it does not take a genius to do what I do.’ Instead they went down this ‘I’m creative… I hate bloggers who are not individuals blah... blah, blah’ route.

I love that these ladies are doing so well (personally I love Susie Bubble's blog and to have such a successful blogger from my hometown is great) however I think looking at blogs in successful/ unsuccessful terms means creating an us and them mentality... blogging is a community of people who get to express their voices no matter how small and I thought this point was overlooked with the 'gems' that were being shared that night.

Which meant when they finished speaking I collected my free drink at the bar*, then my coat and left.
